Will you live to 83?
I read today that the average life expectancy is currently 81 for males & 83 for females. Being a 36 year old that is some great news.
However, I had a stop & think about that fact & some of the personal tragedies that I have already experienced in my life:
- my father died at 59:
- my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 55;
- my father in law who had a heart attack at age 58;
- 5 clients die in the past 2 years;
- 3 footy teammates die by age 45;
- 2 schoolmates die by age 35; and
- not to mention the dozens of people that I know that have had one either a heart attack or a stroke or be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 60 - some as young as 25.
Now maybe I have been fortunate ... but I think that probably most of ye are nodding your heads as well if you can think of similar situations with your family or friends. "But I am fit, healthy, don't smoke, etc etc" Unfortunately the statistics don't lie. When I ran the NY marathon last year for the Heart Foundation, I was staggered with the number of Australians affected by heart disease each year (38,000).
With mortgages & raising families, it is a vital ingredient to have adequate insurance coverage in the event that something happens to you or your spouse/partner. If you already have insurance then that is great ... but make sure you ask yourself if it is adequate enough? Did you know that over 50% of Australians are under-insured.
